What is a Pre-Production Sample (PPS)?
The PPS is the final sample made using the actual bulk fabric, actual trims, and actual washes that will be used in the final order. Unlike the “Proto Sample” (which checks the design) or the “Fit Sample” (which checks the size), the PPS represents exactly what the factory will produce 1,000 or 10,000 times.
Industry Note: Once you approve the PPS, you are giving the factory the “Green Light.” Any errors found after this stage in bulk production are often too late to fix without significant cost.
1.Solving the “Denim Shrinkage” Puzzle
Denim is a living fabric. Unlike polyester or simple cotton knits, denim goes through rigorous washing, stone washing, bleaching, and distressing. This process causes shrinkage—sometimes up to 10-15%.
A high-quality denim manufacturer in China will use the PPS to prove they have calculated this shrinkage correctly.
- The Risk: If the shrinkage calculation is off by even 3%, a Size 32 jean becomes a Size 30 after washing.

2.Calibrating the Wash and Distress Effects
One of the hardest things to communicate digitally is the “wash effect.” Words like “vintage blue,” “heavy stone wash,” or “subtle whiskering” can be interpreted differently by different people.
The PPS serves as the Master Color Standard.
- Whiskering & Fading: Are the hand-sanding marks in the right place? Do they look natural or artificial?
- Chemical Shade: Is the indigo shade too red or too green?
- Tearing/Destruction: Are the distressed rips reinforced properly so they don’t tear open completely after one wear?

4.Verifying Western Fit vs. Asian Fit

- Measurements: Measure the garment flat and compare it to your Tech Pack.
- Seam Strength: Pull on the belt loops and pockets. Denim is workwear; it must be strong.
- Inside Cleanliness: Turn the jeans inside out. Are the overlock stitches clean? is the pocket bag fabric high quality?
- Hardware Test: Zip and unzip the fly 10 times. It should be smooth, not wavy.
